There were hang-outs at pizza parlors, first cars, dates, shopping, and long phone chats with best girlfriends, and there was Pat Nodes.  Pat was a slight built, fun-loving addition to the “girl clique” and one of the first to have a serious dating experience.  His name was Dick Puskas (known as Andy to his employer and church), and he was perfect for Pat — a wonderful couple who eventually married.

As life propels us into different adventures in our lives, I lost contact with Pat and Dick — until 1982 when local newspapers and NY TV News reported a house explosion in the bedroom community of Middlesex, NJ.  Inside that house were Pat and Dick.  They were killed instantly, and their house was leveled.  I was in total disbelief and followed news stories to learn how this ended.

Pat and Dick had three young boys and had become Jehovah’s Witnesses after their marriage.  They moved to 182 First Street in the borough of Middlesex and became involved in the Middlesex Bible Church after sending two of their children to vacation Bible school there one summer.  They were deeply religious and their lives centered around their church. On Tuesdays, they attended a Bible study class; on Fridays, Andrew worked with a teen Bible study group, and on Saturday nights, he showed religious films at the church. Patricia taught Sunday school and Dick (Andrew) was also a lay minister at the church and on his way to becoming the church’s fourth elder.

On February 25, 1982, Dick was preparing to take his two older sons to school while the younger child sat in the car, when he found a package on his front porch.  He took the package into the house, but for some reason became suspicious and sent the two boys outside and then called the police.

As a police officer walked up to the front door of the Puskas home, the house exploded.  The force of the blast threw him over the hood of his patrol car.  He shouted into his microphone, “Send everybody!”

Shrapnel was found in Pat and Dick’s abdomen and chest indicating they were facing the explosion and that Dick may have been closer to the package than Patricia. Both died from “traumatic and hemorrhagic shock due to explosion,” according to autopsy reports.

It was reported that one of the children provided police with a description and diagram of the contents of the package, a 2-foot-square, unmarked cardboard box which the child said held several bottles and a pipe bomb with a 45-second timer.  The description states two bottles were blue; one was a dark blue, and the other a lighter blue. The most significant piece of glass found at the crime scene contained molded lettering, which read in part, “KING’S.”

If the children were not in the house when the package was opened, how was a description of the contents of the box reported?  The bottles contained a flammable liquid. One report stated it was gasoline.  The package was addressed to Andrew Richard Puskas. It could be significant because Andrew went by “Andy” among his co-workers and “Dick” among close friends and church members.

Through the investigation, authorities determined the package was placed on the front porch by the killer and not sent via the United States Postal Service or a shipping carrier, such as United Parcel Service (UPS).

Investigators sent four or five large sacks full of debris to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco (ATF), and Firearms lab in Rockville, Maryland, for analysis. They also sent samples of wood, human tissue, and water left by the fire hoses, which might contain a clue to the nature of the bomb. After several weeks, the samples yielded some evidence, but nothing further was mentioned. The ATF determined that the bomb was a “fairly sophisticated device.”  They believed someone committed the act out of “personal hatred” towards Andrew Puskas.

By April 1982, investigators interviewed between 500 and 550 persons to track down leads, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms had put in 4,000 man-hours at the cost of $100,000 — a lousy $100,000.

As if this tragedy were not enough, some friends of Pat and Dick believed there was a connection between their passion for religion and the murders. The Puskas children went to live with an aunt after the loss of their parents. The aunt had trouble handling all three, so the two older boys went into foster care, and the youngest stayed with her.  Jeannette Puskas, Dick’s mother, suffered a massive heart attack while visiting Pat and Dick’s graves. She died on June 4, 1982.

Years after the murder of Pat and Dick, I was asked by Gannett Publishing to write for their Editorial Board.  I discussed the unsolved killing of my friends with my editor, and he provided me with all the newspaper articles published on the unsolved decades-old murder and my writing an updated article.

After connecting with law enforcement for any updates on the unsolved crime, I hit a wall.  There was no progress on the senseless deaths of my friends decades ago.

What haunts me the most about looking for justice for Pat and Dick was the telephone conversation I had with their pastor.  When I told him that I was going to write an article about the long unsolved murders of my friends and members of his congregation, I was stunned to hear his vitriol towards me.  He said, “We have all forgotten about this — you forget it too.”

I think it’s time for Pat and Dick to receive justice — and no, I will not forget them.

“Dr. Drew” has ventured into selling medications in a kit through his own “Wellness Company” delivered to your door without a medical professional examining the patient or running medical tests. It is mind boggling to me that our ever-diligent FDA allows this and that the kit is advertised as FDA approved when it is not.

There are several medication kits for sale on the Wellness Company site, and the prices range from $299.99 for a Medical Emergency Kit to $1,199.99 for a Field Emergency Kit.

For purposes of this article, I am going to focus on the Medical Emergency Kit and its contents with their side effects. The “prescribed” medications are:

Amoxicillin – a penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, and bronchitis.

Precautions – Amoxicillin can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening. Symptoms may include hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, severe skin reactions and rapid heartbeat. Immediate medical attention is required if these symptoms occur.

Azithromycin (Z-Pak) is used to treat certain bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. This medicine may mask or delay the symptoms of syphilis. It is not effective against syphilis infections.

Azithromycin belongs to the class of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Precautions – This medicine may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It is also used to treat pimples and abscesses (usually on the face) that are caused by rosacea, also known as acne rosacea or adult acne.

Doxycycline belongs to the class of medicines known as tetracycline antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Precautions -This medicine may cause increased pressure inside the head. This is more likely to occur in women of childbearing age who are overweight or have a history of intracranial hypertension.

Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections in different areas of the body. It is also used to treat infections caused by protozoa (eg, trichomoniasis and amebiasis) and infections caused by bacteria that do not need oxygen to survive. The extended-release tablets are used to treat women with vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis).

Metronidazole belongs to the class of medicines known as antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Precautions:

• dizziness or lightheadedness
• feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
• heartburn
• sensation of spinning
• stomach cramps
• trouble sleeping
• weight loss

Trimethoprim is used to treat infections of the urinary tract. It may also be used for other problems as determined by your doctor. It will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Precautions – If this medicine causes anemia, your doctor may want you to take folic acid (a vitamin) every day to help clear up the anemia. If so, it is important to take folic acid every day along with this medicine; do not miss any doses.

Trimethoprim may cause blood problems. These problems may result in a greater chance of certain infections, slow healing, and bleeding of the gums.

Ivermectin is commonly used for the following infections caused by parasites. Parasites are things such as worms that live off of a person.

Ivermectin may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
Precautions – Brain or Central Nervous System (CNS) Problems. Ivermectin can affect your brain or central nervous system, or CNS.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Ivermectin may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking ivermectin and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

• Breathing problems or wheezing
• Racing heart
• Fever or general ill feeling
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
• Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
• Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
• Nausea or vomiting
• Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
• Stomach cramps

Fluconazole is used to treat various yeast and fungal infection. Due to its potential drug interactions and effects on heart and liver function, it requires medical supervision.

Precautions – Fluconazole may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking fluconazole and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

• Breathing problems or wheezing
• Racing heart
• Fever or general ill feeling
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat

Zofran is a medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by surgery, cancer chemotherapy, or radiation treatment. It works by blocking the actions of chemicals in the body that trigger these symptoms.

Precautions – This medicine may cause serious allergic reactions, including Anaphylaxis – It can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Call your doctor right away if you have a rash, itching, hoarseness, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth while you are using this medicine.

Contact your doctor right away if you have any changes to your heart rhythm. You might feel dizzy or faint, or you might have a fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat. Make sure your doctor knows if you or anyone in your family has ever had a heart rhythm problem including QT prolongation.

Ondansetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting that is caused by cancer medicines (chemotherapy) or radiation therapy. It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting that may occur after surgery. Ondansetron works in the stomach to block the signals to the brain that cause nausea and vomiting.

Precautions – Serious side effects: confusion, fast heartbeat and breathing problems.

My review is how are prescribed medications with life-threatening side effects allowed to be mailed to an unsuspecting and naive recipient without a medical professional’s “hands-on” medical examination, bloodwork and urinalysis.

Sorry, Dr. Drew, I’m not buying into this scam of putting people’s lives at risks, and I question why the FDA and medical associations do not question it.

My hope is that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services brings Dr. Drew’s scam to a screeching halt.

After publication of this particular Tamiflu article, I received an email from a grandmother advising me that her 8-year-old grandson was in and out of psychiatric hospitals after being prescribed Tamiflu.  She went on to say that he had been a very normal, happy, energetic child until his body was introduced to Tamiflu.

It appears the CDC is positioning itself to recommend a very dangerous drug called Tamiflu in the treatment of COVID-19. In 2012, I wrote an article warning of the dangers of children and infants being prescribed Tamiflu. This drug causes psychosis, delusions and paranoia and adversely affects children.  The following is that article.

Trail of political and monetary influence causes FDA failure in protecting tiny babies from Tamiflu.

The ever-diligent watchdogs of the American people’s safety – the FDA – have once again disappointed me.   This time, the FDA is targeting “newborns” in approving a dangerous drug to treat “the flu”.  The drug is called Tamiflu. Last week, the FDA announced they had approved Tamiflu for “infants two weeks and older.”

What the FDA fails to acknowledge is that they have, in fact, approved this lethal drug for “newborns” and “infants.”  A newborn is considered an infant at 12 weeks old.  Strange that the FDA misleads the American people yet again.  I would think the FDA would know the difference between a newborn and an infant. In November 2009, I wrote an article about the antiviral drug called Tamiflu (see: http://www.salem-news.com/articles/november212009/ tamiflu_ms.php)

The FDA warning on Tamiflu states, “People with the flu, particularly children, may be at an increased risk of self-injury and confusion shortly after taking Tamiflu and should be closely monitored for signs of unusual behavior.” It was noted that some children were struck with psychosis, delusions, and paranoia – all in formerly normal children. I wonder how a parent will recognize that their two-week-old newborn may be struck with psychosis, delusions and paranoia after being given Tamiflu. Care to answer that “watchdogs?”

Do the words “dangerous drugs” even enter the vocabulary of the FDA? Ever hear of encouraging breastfeeding to build up the immune system of a two-week-old newborn — rather than approving a drug that you acknowledge is dangerous to children — to newborns?

It wasn’t until reports surfaced of more than 100 new cases of delirium, hallucinations and other abnormal psychiatric behavior in children treated with Tamiflu that the FDA changed course and required Roche, the company that makes the drug, to include a warning label cautioning patients, doctors and parents to look out for strange behavior in anyone taking the drug. The patent for Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is held by Gilead Sciences and is valid at least until 2016. Gilead licensed the exclusive rights to Roche in 1996. The drug does not enjoy patent protection in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and several other countries.

Gilead is politically well-connected and is financially very rewarding to many. Donald Rumsfeld served as chairman from 1997 until he became U.S. Secretary of Defense in 2001. Former Secretary of State George Shultz and the wife of former California Governor Pete Wilson, Gayle Wilson also served on the board. By the way, this is the same Donald Rumsfeld who was CEO of Searle — maker of Aspartame, which is an artificial sweetener treated with much skepticism because of medical writings concerned with ties to increased cases of cancers, autism and Parkinson’s disease as well as a myriad of other physical disabilities and diseases.

Aspartame is an additive in many diet soft drinks — as well as other diet foods. When Searle was absorbed by Monsanto in 1985, Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus. The “political” ties to what is affecting the American people in drug treatment, as well as food, are concerning. Tamiflu and Aspartame tied to a former Secretary of Defense — Rumsfeld and a Secretary of State — Shultz.

There is a reason for the huge jump in autism in this country. It has been reported that 1 in 100 children is diagnosed with autism in the U.S. Scary, isn’t it? So, if a former Secretary of Defense (Rumsfeld) was defending us against our enemies abroad — who was defending us against Rumsfeld and his financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry?

The FDA said its expanded use of Tamiflu to “newborns” and infants is based on extrapolating data from previous study results in adults and older children and supporting studies by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Roche.

Tamiflu, which had peak sales of $3 billion in 2009 because of the H1N1 swine flu epidemic, is approved by regulators worldwide, but some researchers claim there is little evidence it works and have asked Roche to hand over data so they can study its effectiveness.

Until such time as breast milk is manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA will continue to approve dangerous drugs as far as their hands can plunge into the pockets of pharma — in this case, at the cost of the lives of newborns two weeks old. Newborns and Infants are defenseless and have no conscience – the FDA has defenses and chooses to have no conscience.

The FDA has approved drugs that help our kids concentrate in school, that curb any hyper-activity in the classroom, and even drugs that help in what is perceived as a lack of social skills in kids. Does anyone else ever question, “What are we doing to our kids?” Or maybe we should be asking, “What are we allowing the FDA to do to our kids?” A dangerous flu medication for newborns as young as 2 weeks old — someone had to benefit big time for this drug approval — and it leads to the door of the FDA.

He has pledged that if he is elected mayor, the city will provide legal representation for all immigrants in detention proceedings.

Five years ago, Zohran Mamdani called police “racist, anti-queer, called for the defunding of police and a major threat to public safety,” but as the Democratic nominee for NY mayor he now says his views have changed.

I have a personal attachment to New York and the wonderful memories and experiences there. My hope is that polls and projections for the winner of the mayor of New York are distorted as they were last year in the presidential election.

When will projections and polls be considered “voter interference” to prevent another Zohran Mamdani of Uganda from potentially destroying a once beautiful city?

My goal in writing this book review is to encourage “the uninformed” to become “informed” — “very informed.” In addition to coming to the realization that medical “experts” may not necessarily have the interest of health in their sights, I also discovered that they may have financial gain in their sights as well, and this is only a piece of the puzzle.

As much as I found Mr. de Becker’s book one of the most compelling books I have read in quite some time, it surprised me that Mr. de Becker was not a medical professional.  What I discovered was a biography of an author that was beyond riveting.

Gavin de Becker is a three-time presidential appointee whose pioneering work has changed the way our government evaluates threats to our nation’s highest officials. Mr. De Becker, a criminologist who enlightens people on corruption, crime and deceit and a behavioral scientist with insights on human behavior as well as a parent. In 1999 – 2000, he assisted the United States Secret Service in the development of its guide for Protective Intelligence and Threat Assessment Investigations.

Here is his bio, which I encourage people to read.  It is fascinating.

I will begin this review with the name of an organization I had never heard of before, “Institute of Medicine (IOM)”.  However, Mr. de Becker certainly enlightened me.

Interested in what makes the IOM tick?

IOM is often paid by government and private industry, including pharma companies, to examine issues pertaining to public health.

An IOM committee was convened to debunk the notion that vaccines might be linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and they debunked it.  The committee concluded, “…evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between exposure to multiple vaccines and SIDS.”

Since IOM is a “private organization”, they are not required to disclose how much they are paid for a particular review, who paid, or how much hired experts were paid.

Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) is another condition the “vaccine injury court” acknowledged can be caused by some vaccines.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program is a no-fault alternative to the traditional legal system for resolving vaccine injury petitions.

It was created in the 1980s, after lawsuits against vaccine companies and health care providers threatened to cause vaccine shortages and reduce U.S. vaccination rates, which could have caused a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Mr. deBecker devoted a chapter of his book to the CDC’s original definition of vaccines and the CDC’s new and improved definition of vaccines.  This was a very intriguing chapter to read.

While reading Mr. De Becker’s book, I looked forward to any reference to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and his decades of exposing the dangers of vaccines.  I was not disappointed by what I read.

Several years ago, Mr. Kennedy and I connected when he was the head of “Children’s Health Defense”, advocating for the safety of vaccines being given to children.  We were both concerned with Janet Woodcock, MD being confirmed as Commissioner of the FDA. I wrote an article which he published, and we were pleased that Woodcock was not confirmed.

I was quite pleased when Mr. Kennedy was appointed the head of the FDA — without M.D. after his name.  The medical profession and pharma companies have profited financially for too long by aligning themselves with the FDA, their hedge fund dealings, conflicts of interest, employment with pharma and financial profiting from pharma.

I could not help but reflect back to 2007 when I delivered an Impact Statement in an Abingdon, Virginia federal court.  For six years, I worked with Department of Justice (DOJ) officials to convict Purdue Pharma, maker of the killer opioid OxyContin, of criminally marketing the drug responsible for millions of addictions and deaths.

My daughter, Jill was a victim of Purdue Pharma when she was prescribed OxyContin for back pain in 2002 and died.  I began a laborious task of learning everything I could about Purdue Pharma and shared my information with the DOJ.

The US Attorney investigating Purdue Pharma connected me with his team and we stayed in close contact by phone calls, emails and several meetings.  In six years, a very rewarding working relationship developed with the DOJ team.

Although my usual intuitive mind did not pick up on a member who was not a team player.  I will save that for another time.

The day in Federal Court to face the criminals responsible for Jill’s death and countless other victims arrived with great anticipation.  I went into a building beside the courthouse and met with the US Attorney and the DOJ team. We all walked together into the courthouse.

Taking a seat near the team, I watched the Purdue Pharma criminals walk into the courtroom and take their seats at the defense table.  There was Michael Friedman, President, Howard Udell, General Counsel and Paul Goldenheim, MD (who looked like a deer in the headlights).

There was a 15-minute break in the court proceedings and many people stood to stretch their legs.  I looked across the small courtroom and saw Paul Goldenheim glaring at me surrounded by his high-powered attorneys. It evolved into a stare down.  I was not about to sit down while he was glaring at me.

Finally, one of the DOJ guys told me I had to sit down and I told him I would not sit down until the felon sat down.  How could I accomplish that since he was so defiant and obviously wanted me to give in to him? I called across the courtroom as my eyes were on Goldenheim, “You are a bastard.”  His defiance left him quickly and he sank into his seat.  It was a good feeling.  I then took my seat and made everyone happy.

When the court proceedings were over, we all filed outside and I remember hearing the blades of a helicopter overhead with the three convicted criminals flying back to Stamford, Connecticut.  It was then that I realized it was not over — not by a long shot.  A multi-billion-dollar criminal pharmaceutical company was going to continue making billions of dollars because they had no conscience.

We walked to a historic tavern for lunch and enjoyed the last time we would all be together, but I was cranking. I had work to do.

When I returned home, I contacted the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC regarding Friedman’s contribution in the form of a display.  I advised them that Friedman was a convicted felon responsible for addictions and deaths and his display paled in his efforts to change his image.

Howard Udell (now deceased), general counsel for Purdue Pharma, had to be accountable for his part in the OxyContin Tsunami.  This included his role in causing the termination of his 25-year-long term secretary who became addicted to OxyContin and was terminated by Purdue Phama.  She reached out to me and we met in Stamford, Connecticut and had numerous telephone conversations.  She was petrified of the power of Purdue Pharma.  Unfortunately, she is deceased — a broken woman.

My first effort with Udell was to have him disbarred or “debarred” by the Connecticut Bar Association.  I was successful in having him debarred, which meant he could not hold an office in the Stamford, Connecticut office.
Udell had indicated he was in private practice at the Udell Law Office, LLC in Westport, Connecticut — “Corporate Counsel” even acknowledged this in their reporting.

Below is the email that Udell sent out when he was debarred and became a liability to Purdue Pharma as their Chief Counsel:

Please be advised that I have retired as a Purdue Pharma employee and am now working as a consultant for Purdue on certain matters. Strange — Udell’s address of One Stamford Forum and his email are at the corporate headquarters of Purdue Pharma — not Westport, Connecticut.  But then maybe Udell is confused.  He lives in Westport, CT.

Just to be sure I was accurate in my reporting, I called the above telephone number and asked if I had reached Howard Udell’s office.  I had indeed.  I asked if Udell worked in Stamford, CT and the receptionist confirmed he worked in Purdue Pharma’s ground floor in Stamford, CT.

I felt led to send a letter to Udell’s son who was also an attorney regarding his father’s culpability in so many deaths and addictions when financial profits took precedent over human lives.

Below is his reply, which I found offensive — especially his referring to his father as a saint.

Dear Ms. Skolek:

Thank you for your letter.  Let me first say that, as a parent, I would not wish the tragedy that you have suffered upon anyone.  I am so sorry for the terrible loss of your daughter.  I certainly can understand and respect how such a horrible loss has motivated you to seek some kind of remedy.  Your belief, however, that my father — or Purdue, for that matter — shares even the remotest culpability for your loss is sadly misguided.  Ms. Skolek, I am glad that you read my sentencing letter.  Assuming that you read the remainder of the submissions, I’m sure you understand that, contrary to the spiteful words you wrote below, my father is beloved by his family, his friends, his work colleagues and virtually everyone with whom he interacts.  You may recall the one letter noting how he is “semi-seriously” referred to as a “saint” by some colleagues.  You have my sincerest hope that you can work through your grief by redirecting your misguided anger and handling yourself in the same noble way that my father has handled himself throughout his wonderful life. 

Best of luck to you.

My reply to Udell’s son was as follows:

“I have been working through my grief — it is called justice in a courtroom.  Yes I believe your father and the other two convicted criminals share culpability and my belief is not misguided.  My daughter too was beloved by her family and is deeply missed.  I do not use spiteful words — I speak for thousands of victims of a criminally convicted pharmaceutical corporation and three convicted criminals who pled guilty to the charges against them.  I do not believe your father to be a noble person but I respect your desire to see him as the person you wish he were.  I would not call your father’s actions as regards the addiction and death of thousands of people as noble — a saint he is not.  I wish you luck too.  You are going to have a rough road ahead of you.”  -Marianne Skolek

Then the “deer in the headlights” Paul Goldenheim, MD had to receive a mother’s justice.

I knew Goldenheim served as a Board Member at a very prestigious private school named Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire where his children were fortunate to attend — money was no object.

I notified Exeter Academy of Goldenheim’s conviction in Federal and was rewarded with the following article published in the “Boston Globe”:

September 9, 2008

An alumnus of the Phillips Exeter Academy, in N.H., has successfully ousted the vice president of the school’s board of trustees, Paul Goldenheim, according to the Boston Globe.

Dr. Goldenheim was a vice president and chief medical officer at Purdue Pharma, in Stamford, Conn., when he and the company pleaded guilty to charges of “misbranding” the company’s painkiller OxyContin. The government convicted Purdue of playing down the addictive qualities of the drug.  In 2008, an alumnus of New Hampshire’s elite Phillips Exeter Academy waged a war against Goldenheim and won. Goldenheim had served on the prestigious board and had been on probation after his 2007 criminal conviction when he pleaded guilty to misbranding OxyContin. Goldenheim stepped down. Board president Harris defended Goldenheim by calling him a “broken man.” Harris went on further to say that Goldenheim had “acted in accordance with the highest ethics of his profession” and pleaded guilty “to avoid additional years of litigation and disruption”. Harris might like to know that Judge James P. Jones of United States District Court indicated that he was troubled by his inability to send the executives to prison at their sentencing.

It was rewarding to read that Goldenheim was a “broken man,” although it does not compare to the devastation of families losing loved ones to Goldenheim’s lies regarding OxyContin.

My Impact Statement in front of Judge James Jones and the three convicted felons of Purdue Pharma fame:

Thank you, your honor for giving me this opportunity to make a statement in front of the three convicted criminals of Purdue Pharma – Michael Friedman, Howard Udell and Paul Goldenheim. 

My name is Marianne Skolek. I am a mom and a grandmother. I had a beautiful 29-year-old daughter named Jill. She had the misfortune of being prescribed OxyContin in January 2002 and was killed on April 29, 2002. Jill left behind her son Brian who was 6 years old at the time of his mom’s death. Brian is with me in the courtroom today. He needed to be here today to see that bad things do happen to bad people. 

How did a $9 billion privately held pharmaceutical corporation take the life of my precious daughter? I wondered exactly the same thing and began my research on Purdue Pharma and some of the key executives of the corporation 5-1/2 years ago. My work initially focused on J. David Haddox, dentist turned psychiatrist and Senior Medical Director of Purdue Pharma. Unfortunately, he is not seated with the three criminals before me. I also focused on Robin Hogen, former PR spokesman for Purdue Pharma who was terminated by the company and also unfortunately is not before me. 

In 1996, the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the American Pain Society issued a set of guidelines for the use of opiates in the treatment of chronic pain. These guidelines are referred to as a
“consensus statement.” This statement leaning toward a more liberal use of opiates was adopted just as the marketing push for OxyContin began.
This consensus statement was produced by a task force which was headed by J. David Haddox, former president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, who was senior medical advisor for Purdue Pharma — the maker of OxyContin. Haddox was quoted as saying that “the point was to gather consensus. If you are going to do this, this is how it should be done.” 

There was question as to whether it was ethical for Haddox to be associated with a pharmaceutical maker to guide the formation of a document that would play a key role in promoting the use of products made by the company — Purdue Pharma. 

At one point in the greed and sheer evil of Purdue Pharma, they intended to market OxyContin to OB/GYN patients. I flooded the country with emails and faxes to Attorney Generals and the media reporting that we had enough devastation in the country without addicting infants to the blockbuster drug OxyContin. This marketing ploy was terminated by Purdue Pharma when they were exposed.

Pain patients from pain societies will speak of the merits of OxyContin and their quality of life being restored because of the drug. These pain societies throughout the country are funded by Purdue Pharma. Let the pain patients not a part of any funded pain society of Purdue Pharma speak about the quality of life they have after becoming addicted to OxyContin — and when their physicians refuse to renew prescriptions for the drug — and they go on the street to buy the drug because they can’t kick the habit of this less addictive drug. 

Ask the FDA why OxyContin is in such plentiful supply on the streets all over the country. 

Anything that is imposed against these convicted criminals will not give us back Jill, but I will guarantee that Purdue Pharma will never forget the name Jill Skolek. 

When I began my work at exposing these three criminals and Haddox and Hogen, I told Hogen that he messed with the wrong mother and they did because my work is not over. 

I want to know why the FDA allowed OxyContin to cause such destruction to the lives of scores of innocent victims. I want to know why 12 warning letters were sent by the FDA to Purdue Pharma about their marketing of OxyContin and to this day, they are not required to put “highly addictive” or “addictive” on the label of the drug.

I want to know why the FDA deleted without reading so many of my emails about the marketing of OxyContin until this last month.

I want to know why Curtis Wright while employed by the FDA played an intricate part in the approval of OxyContin and then was hired by Purdue Pharma.

I want to know why Attorney General Blumenthal of Connecticut’s Citizen Petition which requests strengthened warnings for OxyContin as a result of information they uncovered in their investigation against Purdue Pharma has been sitting at the FDA — without any action — since January 2004.

I want to know how Rudy Giuliani could be the “big star” hired by Purdue Pharma to play down the abuse and diversion of OxyContin and also get paid from the DEA for work performed for them.

I want to know why the Sackler Brothers have not been held accountable for their involvement with Purdue Pharma and the mass marketing of OxyContin. 

Eventually Purdue Pharma will introduce another blockbuster drug like OxyContin and as they did with another devasting drug called Palladone.

Palladone was removed from the market after a couple of months. I like to think that my faxes and emails all over the country played an intricate part in having it removed. My advice to Purdue Pharma is when you are ready to introduce another drug such as OxyContin or Palladone, look behind you because I will be right there. 

I will be working at having Howard Udell disbarred for his criminal activities and Paul Goldenheim’s medical license revoked for what amounts to white collar drug trafficking. I will be actively working at Friedman, Udell and Goldenheim never being able to work in the pharmaceutical industry again because they are criminals who criminally marketed OxyContin. I will accomplish this — do not doubt me at not being successful at achieving this.

Every time I read that Michael Friedman is giving a speech on all his charitable work and the fact that he had a family member that survived the Holocaust, I will contact the group he is speaking to and remind that that Friedman is no better than Adolf Hitler who killed and destroyed countless lives. Hitler through death and torture — Friedman through death and addiction. 

I would like to thank US Attorney Brownlee and all that were involved in this long process of proving Purdue Pharma and these three criminals guilty in the marketing of OxyContin.

In particular, I would like to thank a very special person who knows who he is for never letting us down. You will always be a hero to Brian. 

Her name was Jill Carol Skolek. She did not deserve to be prescribed OxyContin and die because of the criminal activity of these three individuals. Please give my family justice and send them to prison where they belong. They are monsters in every sense of the word. 

(P.S. — as I walked in front of the defense table Friedman, Udell, and Goldenheim surrounded by their attorneys glared at me. I stood and said “you are sheer evil. You are bastards.” I did it for Jill and all the victims of Purdue Pharma. (I was close enough to take a swing at them and hit my mark, but I knew if I resorted to physical contact, my credibility would be destroyed.  Two members of my DOJ team stood on either side of me and escorted me back to my seat).

Yes, Purdue Pharma — you “messed with the wrong mother.”

I will begin with common sense and our children.

Where was common sense when electronic devices replaced “interacting and making conversation?” Go to any restaurant and observe parents and children staring into the screens of their devices — not speaking to each other.

Where was common sense when you heard that a small child pitches a temper tantrum if their electronic device is taken from them?

Where was common sense when reading books, coloring and arts and crafts were replaced by electronic tablets for children to play video games?

Where was common sense when therapists are now peddling books to “empower” parents to wean their children from becoming addicted to electronic devices?

Where was common sense when children were not seen playing outside, jumping hopscotch, riding a bike, but rather were addicted to Internet games and web sites?  Think the upsurge of obesity in our children might be the resulting factor?

Where was common sense when families could not celebrate holidays together?

Where was common sense when people driving alone in their cars wore masks?  Was it meant to keep them from licking the windows?

Where was common sense when people stuck their arm out for vaccines not clinically tested?  Anyone question how vaccines became available so quickly after a China virus crippled our country?

Where was common sense when a “free country” was told to take the vaccine(s), or be out of a job?

Where was common sense when churches and schools were made to close, but not gyms and liquor stores?

Where was common sense when you allowed your loved ones to die alone in a hospital or nursing home?

Where was common sense when people were made to follow footprints on the floors of stores?

Where was common sense when pieces of plexiglass were installed by store cash registers?

Where was common sense when small children were required to wear masks?

Where was common sense when medical conditions such as asthma were not a medical excuse for employers to exempt employees from losing their jobs?

Where was common sense when medical masks were replaced by black cloths covering the entire face? Ever consider the effect that would have on a child not seeing a face — but rather just eyes.

Where was common sense when there were no questions regarding the disposal of contaminated masks being worn for days on end?

Where was common sense when someone decided how much space should be between people — even while wearing masks?

Where was common sense when people reacted to fear rather than research? The “Fauci lack of facts” were readily available to those who wanted science and not scare tactics.

One day early in the morning at the onset of the China virus, I went to the supermarket not wearing a mask. While walking down an aisle and talking to the manager, a woman came running up to me yelling “Where is your mask?” I didn’t miss a beat and replied “I can’t wear a mask. It violates my parole.” She couldn’t get away from me fast enough.

Our country had its parole violated for several years out of fear — and we can never allow it to happen again.

For 23 years, I have exposed the FDA for their knowingly ignoring the deaths and addictions while Purdue Pharma profited in the billions of dollars and officials in the FDA were criminally involved in unimaginable ways.

I am providing Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. with the following information for a thorough investigation into the FDA’s illegal approval of OxyContin:

For years, OxyContin was being abused by victims crushing and snorting the opioid.  This was well known by not only Purdue Pharma, but also by the FDA.

In 2020, the FDA held an Advisory Committee meeting to review the “reformulation” of OxyContin to prevent it from being abused.  Although Purdue Pharma lauded that multiple studies indicated the reformulated tablets were harder to crush and dissolve, making them difficult to snort or inject, the FDA Advisory Committee thought otherwise.

They ruled that Purdue Pharma’s data and data from other researchers did not conclude the reformulation curbed abuse or led to few overdoses.  Link to my article FDA Advisory Committee Meeting on Reformulation of OxyContin Challenged.

While exposing the FDA for deliberately ignoring Purdue Pharma’s criminally marketing OxyContin, I had emailed every Attorney General in the country that 12 warning letters had been sent to Purdue Pharma by the FDA — with no action being taken.  I received a call from a Tom Abrams at the FDA who was not happy with me.  When I asked him why warnings were sent, but it stopped there, he became irate and said words I will never forget — “We don’t have the manpower to police Purdue Pharma.”  My reply to Abrams was “And you don’t think they know that?”  I was left with a dial tone.

At one point, the FDA decided to have a weekly dialogue with me. In their words, “until things were good between us.”  That dialogue continued for almost two years and opened my eyes wider.

During one conversation, I advised the FDA official that Purdue Pharma was discretely promoting OxyContin for something they called “pregnancy pain.”  I was told that would not be allowed by the FDA — so why did Purdue Pharma get away with it.  I sent the FDA proof of what I had reported to them and wrote an article about it. In 2021, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., as Chairman of the Children’s Defense Organization, asked me to write an article regarding Janet Woodcock, MD being confirmed as FDA Commissioner with her many conflicts of interest.  Here is my link to the article Why Janet Woodcock Is Wrong Person to Lead FDA • Children’s Health Defense.

Woodcock was not confirmed.

There were huge conflicts of interest within the highest echelon of the FDA as exposed by me.  They are as follows:

1. Curtis Wright, MD
2. Bob Rappaport, MD
3. Sharon Hertz, MD
4. Ellen Fields, MD
5. Margaret Hamburg, MD

My objection to Wright being appointed to any Advisory Committee at the FDA is that while employed at the FDA, he was involved in the approval process of Purdue Pharma’s blockbuster drug, OxyContin.  He subsequently was hired by Purdue Pharma in an executive position.  I believe this was a violation of FDA employee practices and unfortunately, Wright was never charged with this violation.  A Statue of Limitations on charges against Wright was the FDA’s reasoning for inaction.  Here is one link on my exposing Wright, Rappaport, Hertz and Fields, Is the FDA Really the Watchdog of the American People or Foxes in the Hen House?

I began a 23-year journey of exposing Purdue Pharma for marketing OxyContin for chronic pain and as being non-addictive.  For six years, I worked closely with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in a successful effort at convicting Purdue Pharma of criminally marketing OxyContin. The DOJ led me to testify in front of the US Senate Judiciary Committee along with the US Attorney instrumental in holding Purdue Pharma responsible for addictions and deaths throughout the country.

Unfortunately, my journey for justice for Jill and hundreds of thousands of victims of Purdue Pharma did not end in a small courtroom in Virginia.

Purdue Pharma never wavered and continued marketing and manufacturing OxyContin with a green light by the FDA — while making billions of dollars and having no conscience.

I persevered and attended FDA meetings, met with FDA officials, met with Attorneys General and dogged Purdue Pharma in creative ways.

There were heroes along the way such as Ed Thompson, who has an exemplary resume of expertise on opioids, being featured on CBS 60 Minutes exposing Purdue Pharma.

There were books written about Purdue Pharma well researched with accurate reporting where my reporting was referenced.  One poorly written book was made into a movie where all my hard work was plagiarized.  I was portrayed in the movie fairly accurately although my name was shown as “Skolnik” rather than “Skolek.”

So why today did the “watchdogs” of the U.S. — the FDA announced that their approval of OxyContin was illegal.  Let’s travel down that road.

The current FDA Commissioner, Marty Makary, M.D. had an article published today in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) where he admitted that the FDA’s approval of OxyContin was “illegal.”

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Makary’s article:

“The FDA will take conflict of interest seriously. We will never forget one of the worst self-inflicted wounds of US health care—the FDA’s illegal approval of oxycontin for chronic pain based on a 14-day study, the immediate hiring of the former FDA regulator by Purdue Pharma, and a subsequent epidemic that killed approximately 1 million people in the US.”

The Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has blasted medical journals for being “corrupt” in their articles.  Interestingly enough, Dr. Makary has used medical journals to communicate the FDA’s “vision.”  He further stated decisions made by the FDA were made before clinical trials were completed by the sponsors.

Knowing firsthand Secretary Kennedy’s dedication to the health of Americans, my hope is he expands his attention to the FDA officials and especially their criminal conflicts of interest while profiting financially.
