UPDATE: We now know that the gunman was an Islamic jihadist and was known by the FBI for at least four months, had claimed he was forced to fight for the Islamic State and had been investigated for child pornography.
Authorities have captured a violent gunman who went on a shooting rampage around 1pm today at the airport in in Fort Lauderdale. Five people were killed and at least eight others were wounded when gunman Esteban Santiago opened fire inside of the airport.
The shooting occurred in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2, and authorities are not yet assigning any motive to the attack. However, they are certain that Santiago acted alone and are not currently searching for any accomplices.
According to CNN, the gunman had flown into the airport with a gun checked in his baggage:
The suspect flew to Florida from Alaska, the sources said. When he arrived at the airport, he retrieved his bag at baggage claim, he took out the gun and started firing, the sources said. One source said he went to the bathroom to get the gun out of his luggage and emerged firing.
